We started our journey to the Montsant and Priorat Regions southwest of Barcelona with a car rental and a stop at the convenience store for bathroom and euro-road-snacks… who knew they like Filipinos so much they would name a little donut candy after them… kind of like a round Twix minus the caramel.

“wait here”

Cornudella De Montsant is a beautiful old town seated between the cliffs of Siurana and Montsant. We were there for three days and still couldn’t figure out their schedule, it it appears most restaurants are open around lunch and again in the evening. We stayed at a guest house called La Vileta where we occupied the entire top floor with a gorgeous vista of the Siurana cliffs where we would be climbing. Roser ran the place and spoke no English — she was sweet and patient with my terrible Spanish, she managed to communicate with us how to do some laundry, places to go, and she was accustomed to climbers staying in her guest house so even gave us climbing specific info on where the climbing shop was in town and places around the priorat / Montsant region where there is climbing.

The tiny green regional olives were very deliciuos!
Olives and pearl onions wrapped in anchovies
For dinner we wandered around but couldn’t find any place that was open, we were very hungry so ended up going to the cafe in the square, a very local place where we got some tapas and pizza… wine and beer. The anchovy-wrapped olives were delicious as were the little green olives that would appear every time we sat down, very flavorful and must be from the region which is covered in olive trees.
The locals have a Bohemian bent:
